Chapter Participant Chosen as RBS Scholar

  Chapter Honors Participants
The First Tee of New Orleans resumed operations after Hurricane Katrina in March 2007. We had a record number of juniors show up on registration day to sign up and learn about life and golf. We could accept 90 kids after the storm and left a waiting list of forty. We are primed to grow for our other sesions during the year and our vision is to be the best chapter in the central region.

The Joseph M. Bartholomew Golf Course
Who was Joseph Bartholomew?

Joe Bartholomew, an African American Golf Architect, soothed his restless soul with Catholic dogma and an acquisitiveness wrought from youthful exuberance. He began his journey into the annals of golf as a seven-year-old caddie at nearby Audubon Golf Course. Young Joe began an instant courtship with golf. He copied the swings of those for whom he caddied, taught himself the game's nuances and quickly became proficient enough to instruct others. Joe became such a good player - he once shot 62 at Audubon - that club members backed him in arranged matches. Still, his calling would not be revealed until several years later when he took his talents across town to Metairie Golf Club.

As is sometimes the case, one of the best - in this instance a wealthy Metarie member named H.T. Cottam - extended a hand across racial lines and lifted up a talented individual. Cottam persuaded the club to send Bartholomew to New York to obtain knowledge and experience in golf course architecture. Early in 1922, Bartholomew returned to New Orleans and began construction of Metairie's new course.
